The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, being my favorite 20th century novel, is perhaps one of the most controversial novels of the twentieth century. The Great Gatsby, in my estimation, is a tale of greed and loose morals; values embodied by the rich and middle-class during the prohibition era. The novel describes a lavish time in which gangsters ruled and the common American broke the laws of liquor prohibition while fighting against the policies and ideals of progressives. The book describes a time when women began to express themselves in ways that were quite different than their mothers and grandmothers.  This change in the attitudes of many progressive era women came after recently receiving more social freedom with women's suffrage.

With all the Greatness of this book, it is surprising that it usually makes it to the top of many banned book lists; even the ALA's Banned Book list! Many institutions of higher learning have banned this book throughout the ages because of its raunchy language and sexual references.

Celebrating Banned books week, we have place this book on display at KKC Library for your enjoyment; please check it out!
